Cat Dental Chews Review

Cat Dental ChewsYou have probably seen cat dental chews in the pet food aisle of your supermarket or in a pet store and wondered if they are right for your cat. As cats are living longer these days, cat dental health has become an increasing concern. If you notice cat bad breath, your cat probably has dental disease. Examine the cat’s teeth and gums. If the teeth have brown or yellow staining near the gum line or if the gums are red and inflamed, your cat has gingivitis or worse-periodontal disease. Plaque builds up on your pet’s teeth just like it builds up on yours. If the plaque is not removed, it hardens into hard tartar. The tartar irritates the gums. Over time, your cat’s teeth may become loose and abscesses may form. The only way to remove the tartar is by scheduling a cat teeth cleaning with your veterinarian.

During the cleaning, your pet will be anesthetized. The veterinarian will take some x-rays. Next, your cat’s mouth will be flushed with an anti-bacterial solution. The dentist will use instruments or ultrasound to remove the tarter. Microscopic scratches are removed by polishing the teeth.

As with humans, prevention is better than treating problems down the line. Specially designed cat dental chews are slightly abrasive and therefore helpful in removing plaque. Some cat dental chews have special enzymes that inhibit the growth of bacteria. But dental diet cat food and cat dental chews are not enough to prevent dental disease in cats. You should brush your cat’s teeth every day, just as you brush your own teeth every day! Never use human toothpaste on your cat. There are specially designed toothpastes for cats. They come in different flavors. Start gradually by letting your cat lick a little toothpaste off your finger. Gradually introduce a pad, sponge or brush designed specifically for cats. Don’t hold your kitty too tightly. If you approach this gradually and over time, both you and your cat will come to enjoy this shared activity and your cat will be rewarded with good dental health!
